Obsidian is not a crystal at all. It is glass, formed when lava cools so fast that no crystal structure has time to grow — which is why the beads read as solid black with a hard, mirror-like shine rather than a sparkle. At 10 mm these beads carry real weight on the wrist, and the strand is sized for a larger fit than our standard 8 mm pieces.

What you receive

  • Stone: Natural black obsidian
  • Charm: 999 fine silver pixiu
  • Bead size: 10 mm
  • Length: Approx. 19–20 cm (7.5–7.9 in), elastic

About black obsidian

Obsidian is volcanic glass rather than a crystal — lava cooled too fast for crystals to form. It measures 5–5.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than quartz, and takes a mirror polish that gives it its deep black sheen.

Fit and sizing

Beads measure 10 mm and the strand runs approximately 19–20 cm (7.5–7.9 in) unstretched, sized for a larger wrist or a loose fit on an average one. The elastic core rolls on without a clasp. If you need a shorter length, message us before ordering.

Care

Obsidian scratches more easily than quartz, so keep it in a soft pouch rather than loose in a drawer. Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. The 999 silver pixiu will tarnish over time — this is normal for fine silver, and a silver polishing cloth restores it. Do not use abrasive cleaners on the charm.

Common questions

Is the pixiu charm 925 sterling or 999 fine silver?

The charm is 999 fine silver. Fine silver is 99.9% silver — softer and purer than 925 sterling. It tarnishes more slowly than sterling but dents more easily, which is why it is used for a charm rather than for a clasp or a load-bearing finding.

Is obsidian a crystal?

No. Obsidian is volcanic glass, not a crystal — lava cooled so fast that no crystal structure formed. It measures 5–5.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than quartz, which is why it takes a mirror polish but picks up fine scratches with hard daily wear.

Will a 10 mm bracelet fit?

The strand measures about 19–20 cm (7.5–7.9 in) unstretched on 10 mm beads, which suits wrists from roughly 16 to 21 cm. It rolls on over the hand with no clasp.

How do I look after the silver charm?

Wipe the beads with a soft dry cloth and polish the charm with a silver cloth, without abrasive paste — abrasive paste removes the darkened relief that gives the pixiu its detail.

How long does delivery take?

Orders are processed in 1–3 business days from our Shenzhen studio. Standard delivery to the US takes 10–20 business days and costs $8; shipping is free on orders over $70. Express delivery is $15. A tracking number is emailed once the parcel is handed to the carrier.

About this piece

What exactly is this piece made from?

Natural gemstone. Every piece is inspected by hand before it ships. Treatments that are standard in the trade — heat-treated amethyst sold as citrine is the classic example — are explained in our material & treatment guide.

What should I know before ordering?

Each piece is assembled from natural stone, so colour, pattern and exact dimensions vary slightly from the photographs. The specification table above lists what is measured for this piece.

Can I wear it every day, or in water?

The stone itself is not harmed by a splash, but removing it before showering, swimming, sauna or the gym is the single easiest way to make it last. Chlorine and salt water attack elastic over time, and repeated flexing is what eventually wears any cord out.

How should I care for it?

Roll it on rather than stretching it over your hand, wipe it with a soft dry cloth after wearing, and keep it away from perfume and chlorine. Store it flat in the pouch provided, out of direct sun. See our crystal care guide.
