Moonstone is feldspar: orthoclase and albite layers stacked at a microscopic scale. Light entering those layers scatters and returns as a soft floating sheen, which is why the stone appears to glow from slightly below the surface rather than reflect off it. This is the blue-grey material, mainly from Sri Lanka and India, at 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale.

About moonstone
Moonstone is feldspar — a mix of orthoclase and albite layers stacked at a microscopic scale. Light entering those layers scatters and returns as the soft floating sheen called adularescence, which is a physical effect rather than a coating. It measures 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Grey and blue-grey material comes mainly from Sri Lanka and India, and the body colour is natural.
Fit and sizing
It is a single loop, elastic bracelet on elastic with no clasp, and fits approx. 15-18 cm (5.9-7.1 in) wrist. Because the core is elastic it rolls on over the hand, so there is nothing to fasten one-handed. If you need a specific length, message us before ordering and we will tell you what is in stock.
Care
Feldspar has cleavage planes, so a sharp knock can split a bead. Wipe with a soft damp cloth, avoid ultrasonic cleaning, and store the bracelet flat in a pouch rather than loose in a box.

What causes the blue glow?
Feldspar grows as alternating microscopic layers of two related minerals. Light entering the stone scatters between those layers and comes back out shifted, producing the floating sheen called adularescence. It is a physical effect of the structure.
Is the blue a dye or a coating?
Neither. The body colour is natural and the sheen comes from inside the stone. Nothing is applied to the surface, and the effect cannot be printed on.
Is moonstone fragile?
It has cleavage planes, so a sharp knock can split a bead even though hardness is 6-6.5. Store the bracelet flat in a pouch, avoid ultrasonic cleaning, and take it off before lifting anything heavy.
