Sugilite is a rare purple cyclosilicate, and the word rare is doing real work here. Commercially, it comes from essentially one place — the Wessels mine in South Africa's Northern Cape — and the mine's output has been limited and intermittent. That is why genuine sugilite is expensive and why so much of what is sold as sugilite is something else.
The colour is a deep, slightly grape-like purple, sometimes with reddish or pinkish patches, usually with black matrix running through it. Translucent deep purple material, called gel sugilite in the trade, is the top grade and is priced like a semi-precious gem.
What sugilite is, in mineral terms
A potassium sodium lithium iron manganese aluminium silicate — the formula is long, and the practical point is that it contains both manganese and iron, which is where the purple comes from. Hardness 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, no distinct cleavage, but brittle.
Most bead-grade sugilite is not pure sugilite. It is a rock: sugilite mixed with quartz, bustamite, pectolite and other manganese minerals from the same deposit. That is normal and expected. The proportion of sugilite determines the colour depth and the price.
What is sold as sugilite but is not
Dyed howlite or magnesite. The most common substitute. White porous stone dyed purple. It is uniform, has no black matrix of the right character, and the dye shows in cracks and around bead holes.
Phosphosiderite. A genuine purple-pink mineral from Chile and Brazil, softer and usually more pinkish-mauve, often sold as "sugilite" by sellers who are guessing.
Charoite. A Russian purple silicate with a fibrous, swirling pattern and a distinctly different look — more violet, more chatoyant, no black matrix.
Lepidolite. Purple mica, much softer (Mohs 2.5 to 3), flaky and glittery, sometimes dyed to look deeper.
Sugilite jasper. A trade name for dyed or natural purple-banded material that contains little or no sugilite.
How to judge real sugilite
Colour depth and hue. Real sugilite is a saturated, slightly red-shifted purple, not a flat violet. Very even, bright purple across a whole strand is a warning.
Matrix. Black manganese oxide matrix in irregular patches and veins is typical. It should look mineral, not painted.
Translucency. Gel-grade sugilite glows slightly at the edges. Opaque material is common; translucency indicates higher sugilite content.
Weight. Sugilite is dense. Dyed howlite feels light by comparison, and plastic feels lighter still.
Price realism. This is the bluntest test. Genuine sugilite at 10mm is expensive. A full strand at a low price is not sugilite, whatever the listing says.
What to look for when you buy
Disclosure. A seller dealing in genuine sugilite will say "sugilite with quartz matrix" or "gel sugilite" rather than just "sugilite". Ask what percentage of the bead is sugilite, and expect an answer.
Consistency. Beads are sorted for colour before stringing, and sugilite varies enormously. A matched strand took more rough and costs more.
Polish. Sugilite takes a high, slightly waxy polish. A glassy surface on a purple bead suggests dyed material. Our size guide covers bead counts and fit.
Care and wear
Warm water, mild soap, soft cloth. No ultrasonic, no steam, no soaking. Sugilite is brittle and does not like thermal shock, and dyed material will leach.
Store separately and avoid impact. At Mohs 5.5 to 6.5 it scratches more easily than quartz. Full method in the crystal care guide.
What the meaning claims can and cannot support
Sugilite is associated with spiritual protection and with the concept of "purple ray" energy in some modern systems. That vocabulary comes from twentieth-century metaphysical writing, not from mineralogy. There is no clinical evidence for any effect, and we do not present these claims as fact.
What is factual is scarcity. A genuine sugilite bracelet is a piece of material from a single, limited deposit, and that is a defensible reason to own one — provided you are actually getting sugilite.
Frequently asked questions
Where does sugilite come from? Commercially, almost entirely from the Wessels mine in South Africa's Northern Cape. Output is limited and intermittent.
Is sugilite always pure? No. Most bead material is a rock containing sugilite with quartz and other manganese minerals from the same deposit.
How can I tell real sugilite from dyed stone? Real material has irregular black matrix, uneven depth of purple and a dense feel. Dyed howlite is uniform, light, and shows dye in cracks and bead holes.
What is gel sugilite? Translucent, high-sugilite material with a glowing purple depth. It is the top grade and the most expensive.
Is sugilite the same as charoite or lepidolite? No. Charoite is a fibrous violet Russian mineral; lepidolite is purple mica at Mohs 2.5 to 3. Neither is sugilite.
See the current purple bracelets, or compare it with amethyst and lepidolite.
