Xiuyan Jade Bracelet — Natural Chinese Serpentine Beads
Free shipping over $70 · 30-day returns · Inspected by hand
Xiuyan jade is one of the stones most often mislabelled online. It comes from Xiuyan County in Liaoning Province and it is serpentine, not nephrite jade; the name is a local trade name rather than a mineral class. That matters because serpentine is much softer, at roughly 2.5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, and it is usually waxed after polishing to bring up the green.

About Xiuyan jade
Xiuyan jade comes from Xiuyan County in Liaoning Province and is serpentine, not nephrite — the name is a local trade name rather than a mineral classification. Serpentine is softer than either jadeite or nephrite, measuring roughly 2.5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, and it is usually waxed or lightly oiled after polishing to bring up the green. Colour ranges from pale celadon to a deeper olive with darker flecks.
Fit and sizing
It is a single loop, elastic bracelet on elastic with no clasp, and fits approx. 15-18 cm (5.9-7.1 in) wrist. Because the core is elastic it rolls on over the hand, so there is nothing to fasten one-handed. If you need a specific length, message us before ordering and we will tell you what is in stock.
Care
Serpentine is one of the softer stones used in jewellery, so it marks if it knocks against metal or harder beads. Do not soak it and do not use an ultrasonic cleaner; a soft damp cloth and a dry polish are enough. Keep perfume and hairspray off the surface, since solvents strip the polish.

Common questions
Is Xiuyan jade real jade?
It is real stone, but it is serpentine rather than nephrite or jadeite. In the Chinese trade the name Xiuyan jade refers to serpentine from Xiuyan County in Liaoning, and it is softer than either of the true jades. We would rather say that plainly than let the name imply something it is not.
Why does the colour look deeper than when it arrives?
Serpentine is normally waxed or lightly oiled after polishing, which deepens the green. The wax wears back over a few months and the surface returns to its natural tone. Re-polishing with a soft dry cloth restores some of the depth.
How do I care for a soft stone like this?
Keep it away from water, perfume and hairspray, and do not use an ultrasonic cleaner. Wipe with a soft damp cloth and dry it immediately. Because it is soft, store it in a pouch rather than loose in a box.

About this piece
What exactly is this piece made from?
Natural gemstone. Every piece is inspected by hand before it ships. Treatments that are standard in the trade — heat-treated amethyst sold as citrine is the classic example — are explained in our material & treatment guide.
What should I know before ordering?
Each piece is assembled from natural stone, so colour, pattern and exact dimensions vary slightly from the photographs. The specification table above lists what is measured for this piece.
Can I wear it every day, or in water?
The stone itself is not harmed by a splash, but removing it before showering, swimming, sauna or the gym is the single easiest way to make it last. Chlorine and salt water attack elastic over time, and repeated flexing is what eventually wears any cord out.
How should I care for it?
Roll it on rather than stretching it over your hand, wipe it with a soft dry cloth after wearing, and keep it away from perfume and chlorine. Store it flat in the pouch provided, out of direct sun. See our crystal care guide.
