Substantial and clean

Bigger than a palm stone, nice and substantial. No weird chemical smell or anything. Good if you like the uncut look.

Exactly the uncut look

It's a raw chunk, not polished, which is what I wanted. Rough and dark with some interesting edges. Sits on my altar now. Exactly as described.

About this Black Tourmaline (Schorl) specimen

What exactly is this specimen made from?

Natural Black Tourmaline (Schorl). Tourmaline group - borosilicate (Mohs hardness 7-7.5). Every piece is inspected by hand before it ships. Treatments that are standard in the trade — heat-treated amethyst sold as citrine is the classic example — are explained in our material & treatment guide.

How large is this specimen, and how did it form?

Natural raw black tourmaline (schorl), unpolished. Weight: 60–90g. Finish: Natural — may have minor mineral inclusions, which are normal. It is a natural formation, so your piece will differ in shape, size and colour from the one photographed — that is what an unpolished specimen is.

Where do the stones come from?

Brazil, India, Madagascar and Inner Mongolia — varies by stone. Stone is bought in batches, so the exact locality can differ from one piece to the next; where a single origin is given in the specification table above, that is the origin for this batch.

Can it go in water or direct sunlight?

Water is fine for most stones, but skip salt water and ultrasonic cleaners. Prolonged direct sun can fade some colours — amethyst, rose quartz and fluorite are the ones to watch — so do not leave it on a sunlit windowsill for weeks at a time.

How should I care for it?

Dust with a soft dry brush or cloth. Avoid household cleaners, and do not soak a specimen with soft inclusions. Store it where it will not knock against harder stones. See our crystal care guide.
